About Us

At the West Newton Hearing Center, we have three clinical audiologists, all licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are members of the Academy of Doctoring Audiologists and the American Academy of Audiology.

Our entire staff is assembled for one purpose: to serve our patients. Our goal is to provide you with the best possible hearing care we can, based on your individual needs. We provide a comprehensive array of services related to evaluation, rehabilitation, and prevention of hearing impairment.

We pledge to provide comprehensive hearing healthcare to individuals of all ages and are committed to assisting each patient towards the goal of improved quality of life through better hearing.

Mission Statement

The West Newton Hearing Center’s audiologists and staff strive to provide comprehensive and professional hearing health care, from prevention to rehabilitation.

Our patient care reflects our experience and dedication to providing excellent individualized services and maximizing your benefit from hearing devices.

We know first hand that better hearing dramatically improves quality of life; it strengthens relationships, builds confidence, and keeps you connected to what matters most.

We pride ourselves on helping you sift through all the information available about hearing devices to find the best solution for you and your loved ones.

Our favorite challenge is working with those who have tried hearing devices in the past and been disappointed–we can help you. Bring it on!

Professional Staff

Rhonda Natanblut Ruby, M.S., Executive Director

Rhonda Natanblut Ruby, Executive Director

Rhonda Ruby, founder of the West Newton Hearing Center, started her career
interning at the VA Hospital in Syracuse. She later served as Director of
Audiology at a small community hospital in South Central Massachusetts.
And as audiologist at Children’s Hospital in Boston.

When she opened her own practice back in 1984, her aim was to deliver a
vastly superior level of care and patient sensitivity. And to offer
patients easier access to cutting edge technology, custom-suited to their
hearing needs.

Guided by that philosophy, the West Newton Hearing Center is now more than
30 years old, and thriving. The practice has grown, with long-standing
clients continually referring friends and family to us. And new partners
have been added—Kevin and Melissa Mahaffey, a highly qualified
husband-and-wife team, both of whom embrace the West Newton Hearing
Center’s ethos of kindness and professionalism.

Today, Rhonda continues to actively manage the practice, leaving Kevin and
Melissa free to focus on the patients who have come to depend on us. And to
keep abreast of all the latest technology that will help their patients

M.A., Syracuse University; Phi Beta Kappa and B.S. University of Colorado.

Melissa Mahaffey Doctor of Audiology

Melissa Mahaffey, Doctor of Audiology

After 12 years working for a hearing aid manufacturer as a trainer and account manager, Melissa is thrilled to be back in private practice in a setting similar to where she started her career back in Minnesota in 1996. Getting to know her patients and their families is one of her favorite things about working as a dispensing audiologist at West Newton Hearing Center.

Melissa always strives to exceed her patients’ expectations and works with each person to find the right hearing solution for them. She lives in Westwood with her husband, who is not only an audiologist himself, but a hearing aid user as well, and their two children – Kieran and Kiley.

Although she has adopted the Red Sox as her hometown team, she will always be a die-hard Packer fan…but please don’t hold that against her! Melissa is thoroughly enjoying getting to know everyone that is part of the West Newton Hearing Center community.

Au.D., Arizona School of Health Sciences; M.A., University of Iowa; B.A., University of Wisconsin.

Kevin Mahaffey, Clinical Audiologist

Kevin Mahaffey, Clinical Audiologist

Kevin became interested in working to improve hearing through contact with students at the American School for the Deaf (ASD)—he grew up in Connecticut just down the street from ASD. A hearing aid user himself, Kevin is invested in finding the best solutions technology can offer by listening to patients’ needs. In his words, “Fitting hearing aids well is part science, part art, and there is no substitute for experience!”

Kevin began his career working clinically at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA. He later transitioned to sales and training side of the hearing industry; he was VP of Audiology at VoiceMode Hearing Systems and National Sales Manager of Phonak.

Kevin has presented on the topics of hearing aid technology and verification techniques at a number of state and national meetings. He has been published twice in The Hearing Aid Journal—his writing focused on programmable hearing aid technology.

Kevin is married to Melissa, a fellow audiologist at the West Newton Hearing Center. He coaches their daughter’s soccer team and manages a boys’ sports camp in Maine every summer—he’s done this now for 28 years! Kevin is an avid Boston sports fan (especially the Red Sox and the Patriots).

B.A. in Sociology, Drew College, M.A. in Audiology, University of Connecticut, 1987.
